Located on Bengaluru’s Gangadhar Chettiar Road, General Items is a curated space that promises an experience beyond the mundane. —its striking red gates and white walls set against the area’s weathered buildings and quaint surroundings. The store’s glass-fronted window provides just enough of a glimpse to draw you in. Once a school provisions store selling notebooks and other ‘general items’, this space has now been transformed into an occasional gallery and a store for design objects. General Items was founded by business partners, Spandana Gopal of Tipoii, a renowned design studio in Bengaluru and London, along with Sourcing Consultant Malini Malik. Initially stumbled upon for a cozy space for Tipoii, the founders decided to broaden its scope. In an effort to celebrate names that share a similar design philosophy, this 300 sq ft. space, houses independent Indian brands and designers, including Tipoii’s own cerations. Featuring kitchen, lifestyle, and décor products these objects not only serve their practical purposes but also transform ordinary tasks into elevated, thoughtful experiences. Echoing an industrial-chic design style, the store features grey concrete walls that set a robust backdrop. These raw surfaces are juxtaposed with sleek and modern shelves, providing an excellent setting for collections from Claymen, Archana Pidathala, Tosha Jagad, Lovebirds, 1 Shanthi Road, and more. At the store, a tiled island also doubles as a space for their occasional workshops titled ‘Meet the Makers’. This effort tells the tale beyond the material use of the objects housed at General items. Visitors can get up close and personal with the artists behind the products, not only marveling at the items but also appreciating the beauty and effort involved in their creation.
