Situated in Fort Kochi’s Burger Street, a lane lined with culinary hotspots and bulging with mouthwatering aromas is Kashi Art Cafe. Just a few metres away from the Arabian Sea, this space is one of the most dedicated spots for locals and a must-visit for tourists in the city. As you stroll down Burger Street, a subtle signage beckons you towards Kashi Art Cafe and ushers you to a restored Dutch row house— a space that doubles up as an art gallery and a cafe—offering an elaborate menu with a range of dietary options for diverse palates and preferences, quite popular for their cakes and other decadent desserts. Founded in 1997, this spot is perhaps one of the first spaces in Kerala to combine dining and art, often credited with being a launchpad for contemporary art in the state as well. The first glimpse of the café doesn’t overwhelm you with bold statements; instead, it gently draws you into the atmosphere of an unhurried afternoon at home. One of the key elements that create this nostalgic comfort is the café’s distinctive red oxide flooring—a design touch rooted in traditional Indian homes. The interior features a rustic charm with an open-air courtyard lush with greenery, and pebbled stone paths emulate a visual texture and a relaxing environment. Walls are adorned with rotating exhibitions, an eclectic mix of paintings, carvings, sculptures, and local craft, adding an interactive layering to the café’s warm, earthy setting. The layout accommodates a variety of seating options—some ideal for intimate conversations, others for quiet reflection over freshly brewed coffee and meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Select spots in the café even feature benches inviting guests to pause, absorb, and contemplate the art surrounding them.
