At a time when attention spans are shrinking, the very first visual impressions of a design matter immensely. These few seconds determine whether someone just glances and moves on or pauses, looks closer and engages with it. It's one of these attributes that defines the work of design studios like Length Breadth and Height, who have been able to capture form, function and materiality exceptionally well.

Founded by Luv Rohra, who also serves as creative director, the Ahmedabad-based furniture and lighting studio grounds its practice in hand craftsmanship and a deep engagement with natural materials. Rather than imposing form onto material, the studio allows the inherent properties of each medium—its ability to reflect, diffuse, mold, or bear structure—to guide both form and function. This material-led approach is evident across its range of lighting fixtures, lamps, chairs, side tables, and statement décor, where each product is shaped by a thoughtful understanding of how materials behave and perform. Take, for instance, the Tunnel Wall Sconce is conceived around the natural properties of alabaster—a type of naturally occurring stone—and its ability to diffuse light. Set within a square alabaster frame, the light source is concealed inside, allowing illumination to pass through the stone’s microcrystalline structure. As the light scatters within the material, it produces a soft, even glow that feels both warm and inviting. Similarly, designed to contain and shape light, the Terra Wall Sconce consists of two concentric terracotta plates. Light emitted from the smaller inner plate interacts with the larger outer plate, creating a soft, halo-like glow. Other such materials that are a part of LBH include Ceramic - Stoneware Clay, marble, wood, handmade leather paper and Tyvek.

Among other qualities, each of LBH’s products features an earthy, neutral colour palette that blends effortlessly into any domestic setting. The forms are not overly complicated, yet they command attention through thoughtful design. This is especially evident in their sculptural lamps and lighting, which combine 3D shapes—sometimes even merging multiple materials to create holistic, multidimensional pieces where light refracts and scatters in multiple ways.

This brings us to a larger point. While the transformation of functional objects into art—and vice versa—has become mainstream and widely embraced across age groups, the question remains: how does one move beyond familiarity? How can a designer stand out and demonstrate that even within a well-trodden niche, endless possibilities for innovation exist? This is where Length Breadth Height excels. Their designs tread a fine line, appearing maximal yet restrained, expressive yet precise, without ever losing a distinct visual language. Each piece carries a sense of individuality, defined by its forms, proportions, and shaping that's been given considerable thought right from the initial sketches to the final product.
