Kritika Soni's ceramic pieces are not to cajole the eyes habitual to the preconceived notions of beauty benchmarks–instead, they encourage celebrating and finding beauty in the flaws. Holding an MA in textile design from Chelsea College of Arts, London, and having worked in the industry for quite some time, Kritika accidentally found her passion in ceramics and decided to go full-time. Thus, in 2016, Kara Sabi was born–a proponent of the Japanese art of Wabi-sabi centred around accepting transience and imperfections. As a ceramist, Kritika is drawn to the beauty of ageing that is central to her pieces. At Kara Sabi, rustic and weathered shapes are embossed and layered with interspersed patterns that culminate into decorative or functional home decor pieces–a mesmerising range of wall art installations and sculptures. in eye-pleasing earthy tones. Guided by spontaneity, Kritika lets her works take their natural course, and as a result, the two pieces are never the same. In 2018, she was awarded the Junior Fellowship in ‘Pottery and Ceramics’ by the Government of India and her works have been displayed at several pop-ups, and gallery shows in India. With a lovely melange of cracks, uneven edges, and even fabricated decays, Kritika’s handcrafted asymmetries leave a lasting impression and bring you closer to nature’s works.
