Gargi Chandola
A self-taught artist whose miniature paintings are known for their unapologetic approach and themes that revolve around feminism
A self-taught artist based in Delhi, Gargi Chandola’s Pahadi miniatures are unapologetic, and filtered with a sense of humour. One of the first and few artists in India who has explored traditional miniature painting techniques with a contemporary flair, and yet maintained its precision, Chandola’s work gravitates towards themes of feminism, personal history, violence, and socio-political hierarchy. In her paintings, women who are typically pigeonholed into submissive genders, take on powerful and playful roles in an overwhelmingly masculine space. Through the bold use of colours, the recurring characters in Chandola’s artworks - an anonymous woman and monkeys - reckon with the female gaze that is currently a coveted subject in the Indian art space. Titled Macaqophony, this 16-part series gained recognition for its characters that ostensibly mimic human behaviour and follow a storyline for its viewers to carefully observe and interpret. Beyond individual pursuits, Gargi co-founded the Post-Art Project, a multi-disciplinary arts studio while simultaneously. Some popular exhibitions in the artist's portfolio include The India Art Fair in New Delhi, Indianama at Rich Mix London as part of the London Design Festival and more, solidifying her presence in the contemporary art scene. Chandola's versatility further shines through zines and large-scale murals that explore various other themes including the environment. With her innovative approach to art, Gargi is poised to make a transformative impact on the art world, reshaping perceptions and inspiring creativity.
