Oshin
Founded by Oshin Sarin • Started in 2022 • Conscious Clothing
Transcending binaries and challenging conventions - particularly the idea that oversized clothing is synonymous with unisex fashion - Oshin’s androgynous take on apparel is meant to embrace all bodies. Introducing ranges that are distinguished by ‘body type’ over gender bifurcation, Oshin is setting new standards, emphasizing that what we wear should harbour a sense of freedom rather than confine us to dictated proportions. The label stands out for delving deeply into the fundamentals of aesthetics and comfort, actively working to reshape its perception.
Founded in 2022, Oshin Sarin’s eponymous label delves deeply into the fundamentals of aesthetics and comfort, actively working to reshape its perception. This philosophy resonates in every garment through prioritizing structure, ungendered sizing, organic materials, and conscious dyeing techniques as the cornerstone of the brand. What’s noteworthy is Oshin’s ability to be both understated and eye-catching. Their minimalist make cuts back on flamboyancy, and through a careful interplay of sharp clean lines, subtle detailing and impeccable tailoring ensure that every outfit draws you in with its uniqueness.
Denim takes a strong hold on the founder’s imagination, forming a significant part of Oshin’s collection. In a refreshing take, the label explores the timeless fabric in varied silhouettes challenging its connotations with casual wear. Their collections offer denim in draped blazer dresses, shirts and more, as elevated workwear formals and several other dusters, coord sets and bottoms as everyday statement pieces. Such approaches highlight that efforts are underway, championed by labels such as Oshin, to reimagine textiles and introduce them to fresh contexts. For those inclined towards a more tinted scale, there are pieces spanning muted greys, greens and reds- amongst the other indigo-hued designs predominant in Oshin’s collections - that are ideal for everyday wear,
Mindfulness also forms an important part of Oshin’s clothing, employing fabrics such as recycled cotton, organic cotton corduroy, banana, lotus and rose fibres to offer breathability to its wearer. Oshin's principles are also mirrored in how they showcase their designs on their platform. Defined by clean and minimal aesthetics, their shoots focus on the garments with precision and clarity - veering away from the glamour and steeped in a realistic display.
BTB: What drove you towards unisex clothing and working with fabrics like banana, lotus and rose fibres?
OSHIN: Unisex/Fluid clothing to me is something that feels like a warm hug, be it oftentimes the oversized-ness of it or the dainty design details. It’s inviting and experimental at the same time, it’s super new age and limitless, I think what I love about it. It was also the whole process of developing these textiles that instantly intrigued me - it is all hand made using plant filaments with the end product having such a good feel, lustre and durability. These are all season less fibres given how one puts it to use. I think it was all these things that made be want to experiment and play around with it instantly.
BTB: What has been an accomplishment that you have been the most proud of in your journey?
OSHIN: It’s a moment for me rather than an anecdote. It’s when the thought process behind our designs, fabric choices and the overall shopping experience with us for eg our packaging design, our web-shop navigation- all these little but very important details that is essentially the foundation of the brand, it’s when all of it is noticed and appreciated by our audience, that’s what makes my heart full.
BTB: How do you visualize an ideal Oshin customer?
OSHIN: Both men and women - straight, queer, asexual. I imagine my ideal customer to enjoy dressing up, styling, stepping out of their comfort zone from time to time to see what’s working for them and what’s not. Shopping is all about being inquisitive and having fun and that’s exactly what I imagine them to be doing. They’d be progressive, inquisitive, appreciative of art, fashion, culture and languages.
BTB: What’s your all-time favourite product?
OSHIN: I love to play around with the functionality of clothes, hence there have been times when I’ve worn a couple of our buttoned front dresses like the Ombre Washed Maxi and the Draped Blazer Dress as a jacket over a pair of ankle length jeans and a white camisole/bandeau, completed with a pair of white thin strap heels.
BTB: Which three homegrown labels have grabbed your attention that you'd like to give a shoutout to?
OSHIN: Margn, Ituvana, Reik Studio
