Just off the industrial stretch of Mahalaxmi in central Mumbai stands the G5A Warehouse, a repurposed mill building that now serves as a cultural hub. Located among workshops, mills and transport routes, the space remains closely tied to the working character of the neighbourhood while opening its doors to exhibitions, performances, film screenings and public gatherings.

The building retains much of its industrial character. Tall ceilings, exposed brick walls and wide open spans give the warehouse a sense of scale and flexibility, allowing it to adapt to different kinds of programming without requiring dramatic alterations. The layout can shift easily through temporary seating, movable partitions and simple staging elements, so the space changes depending on what it hosts.

Founded in 2015 by architect and filmmaker Anuradha Parikh, G5A was conceived as a platform for contemporary cultural practice. Over the years it has developed a programme that moves across disciplines. Evenings at the warehouse might include concerts that range from R&B and electronic music to Indian classical performances, alongside experimental theatre and collaborative performances. The space also regularly hosts film screenings, conversations on urbanism, art and social change, and talks that bring together writers, scholars and practitioners from across fields.

Beyond the performance and exhibition areas, the venue also houses a café that functions as an informal extension of the cultural space. Visitors often move between events and the café, turning the warehouse into a place not only to watch or listen, but also to spend time and exchange ideas.

What distinguishes G5A is the accessibility it offers. While the programming attracts artists and regular art patrons, the space does not feel closed off to newcomers. Its open layout and varied events encourage visitors who may simply be curious to step in, attend a talk, watch a performance or spend time within the environment.

Rather than presenting itself as a highly polished cultural venue, the G5A Warehouse embraces its industrial character and adaptability. In doing so, it creates a setting where cultural activity unfolds naturally, shaped by the city around it and the diverse audiences who pass through its doors.
