Oddbird Theatre
Delhi
Oddbird Theatre and Foundation is an independent performance space in Chattarpur, New Delhi, founded in 2016 by Akhil Wable and Shambhavi Singh. Set away from the city’s formal cultural corridors, it was conceived as a response to Delhi’s rigid auditorium culture—one that often places performance and audience at a remove. Designed by Studio Juggernaut, the space mirrors this intent. Raw concrete floors, exposed brick walls, visible ducts, and tall glass doors give Oddbird an industrial, unfinished quality that feels intentional rather than austere. Light drapes, reclaimed wooden furniture, and low-cost fixtures allow the space to shift easily—adapting to theatre one evening, a dance performance, or a music set the next. With no pillars, high ceilings, and seating for about 100 people, the room keeps performers and audiences close, both physically and emotionally. The programming is varied and hands-on. Oddbird presents theatre, contemporary dance, music, jazz, experimental performance, and readings, often in formats that mix forms or invite reflection. Examples include Oddlab, where experimental dance and sound pieces are tested with audiences, and theatre pieces such as Jhumkewali, a multilingual story set in 1970s Bombay.

The venue also hosts world music and jazz performances, avant-pop and synth-pop audiovisual sets, folk music gatherings, puppet theatre for children, and experimental reading sessions where audiences explore scripts together. One of its flagship events is the Friends of Oddbird Festival, a multi-day celebration of theatre, music, and dance that brings together curated performances, films, and open conversations between artists and audiences. Unlike many venues that simply rent space, Oddbird’s team works closely with artists from early development through to performance, offering production support, technical input, and guidance as part of a shared process. The café adjoining the performance area reinforces the venue’s informal, communal atmosphere, giving audiences a chance to stay, talk, and connect after shows. This approach ensures that Oddbird is not just somewhere to watch a performance—it is a space to inhabit, where experimentation is taken seriously and sharing the experience between artists and audiences is central to its ethos.
