Today, most of our Instagram feeds are populated with images documenting career achievements, travels to far-flung destinations, meticulously-made meals, and near perfect outfits. Consuming content of this kind often pressures us to show up as the best version of ourselves no matter what the circumstances, and this can quickly become overwhelming. Goblin mode, the Oxford word of the year, acknowledges this exhaustion that most of us are currently experiencing, and rejects the unrealistic standards that social media platforms set. The term, which was picked by public vote, is defined as “a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.” This could look like binge-watching a series on Netflix with several snacks on standby, playing video games till you feel lightheaded or like Carrie Bradshaw, in season four of Sex And The City, eating saltine crackers and grape jelly without any judgment. But, while the makings of this state of mind can vary vastly depending on one’s personality and preferences, there’s almost always one key component–comfortable clothing. Indulgent activities, many will attest, are best enjoyed when you add roomy, laid-back separates to mix. So, ahead, we’ve rounded up 10 essentials that will help you not only switch on but also thoroughly enjoy being in goblin mode.
