Aman Khanna
The sublime ceramist who is observing the world with his thought-provoking and adorable figurines
Aman Khanna is a Delhi-based sculptor and founder of Claymen who creates evocative ceramic sculptures that have a mind of their own. Some are functional, to be used as planters, vases, lights, etc., while some are dysfunctional shapes, materialized from the observations of a common man and his dilemmas. The expressions on these clay heads speak for themselves - some are gasping relatably while some are grappling with an existential crisis - yet they are peaceful, contemplative, and quiet spectators. Eliciting a compelling context, the grandeur of these figures perhaps lies in the simplicity of the material used: clay, a robust and everyday raw material that ultimately entrusts itself to the earth. Aman’s Claymen gained appreciation at the Pictoplasma Academy’s Conference in Berlin in 2014. They have since appeared in international publications including WGSN, Monocle, BBC, and Curbed Magazine, among many others, along with numerous Indian publications including Architectural Digest, Beautiful Homes, Good Homes, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and others. Molding figures and objects, however, is just one of his many folios. Aman has graduated from the London College of Communication and is also a graphic artist, illustrator, and visual storyteller, all of which succinctly dribble into the idiosyncratic and endearing characters of Claymen.
