Sudheer Rajbhar
A determined artist who is reclaiming the dignity of an ostracized community with chic and sustainable handcrafted accessories
Sudheer Rajbhar is more than just a designer. An artist by profession, an activist at heart, and a founder with a cause. For him, the purpose of design is to find a solution—whether it is exploring novel materials or fighting the class divide in society. However, in a world that frequently orchestrates violence to solve matters, Sudheer maneuvers the expression of art to resist injustices. Raised in the slums and familiar with caste-based discrimination, Sudheer has worked with several leather artisans from the Chamar community affected by the industrial leather ban in 2015. He retrained them to work around a new material that he developed using recycled waste rubber, thus establishing CHAMAR studios (a moniker derived from the chamar community to challenge its colloquial casteist slurs) -a label that handcrafts chic, gender-neutral, cruelty-free accessories. In 2020, Sudheer curated a show called, ‘We are here because you are there’, highlighting assistants of an artist who are often exploited and whose efforts go uncredited. He also introduced a project as a part of his Chamar Foundation, ‘The Reclaimed Tote’ where local artisans collaborated with 66 renowned designers in the industry to reimagine a unique tote bag using discarded scraps from their studios. The project focused on inclusivity, sustainability, and reclaiming the dignity of the Chamar community.
