Rooshad Shroff Gallery
Mumbai
In Mumbai’s Ballard Estate, architect Rooshad Shroff’s gallery is housed within the historic Dubash House. Sharing the same floor as his studio, the two spaces together span a sprawling 7,000 sq ft, each maintaining its own distinct identity. Conceived as a nexus of design, craft, and conceptual exploration, the gallery is more than just a place to showcase Shroff’s collection of furniture and lighting. It expands the vocabulary of a conventional studio, serving both as a home for his evolving practice and as a response to India’s growing appetite for design-led experiences. Under one roof, the beauty of architecture, art and their makers–the artisans–is given equal emphasis. It unfolds through a linear layout featuring a lofty entrance chamber, gallery wing, conference room, private cabin, and open-plan studio. The gallery and workspace, while distinct in function, coexist in close dialogue, constantly informing each other. Signature pieces featuring inlay and hand-finished surfaces sit alongside suspended pivot walls that rotate to create flexible exhibition zones, allowing the space to adapt to curated showcases or intimate installations. Heritage details, like the arched motifs on the building’s old colonial façade, are gently repeated inside. Mirrored walls, mosaic floors, marble accents, and a palette of light wood and grey tones give the space a calm, elegant feel. Natural light filters in generously, bringing warmth and highlighting the craftsmanship embedded in each piece. The space also includes select artworks from Shroff’s personal collection, along with collaborations like The Gyaan Project—where contemporary artists such as T. Venkanna and Tanya Goel explore inlay techniques—and embroidered pieces from the Kalhath Institute's residency program in Lucknow. These projects speak to the studio’s deep commitment to traditional craft, seen through a modern, multidisciplinary lens. The inaugural showcase brought together earlier works from the C-Series alongside new additions to the Balance collection—now rendered in travertine, expanding the studio’s material vocabulary. Whether viewed as a gallery, workspace, or a collaborative hub, the space reflects a design philosophy that values restraint, refinement, and craft, offering a quiet but powerful invitation to pause, discover, and engage.
