11.11/eleven eleven

While several homegrown labels have embraced and elevated traditional textiles and crafts, 11.11/eleven eleven has cultivated a design language that sets its silhouettes noticeably apart. Much of the labels’ core foundations are derived from their belief that “the moment we put on clothing, there is a shift from being an individual to an interconnected member of society”—amplifying the larger role of crafted clothing beyond simply enveloping the body.

Co-founded by Himanshu Shani and Mia Morikawa in 2008, 11.11/eleven eleven is renowned for creating a limited batch of seasonless garments that include shirts, outerwear, dresses, T-shirts, accessories, and more. A hallmark of the brand is its understated simplicity—steering away from ornate craft techniques, 11.11/eleven eleven leans into a luxurious, refined aesthetic. While it is common to find crafts such as Bandhani, Kantha, Shibori, and Indigo dyeing in their collections, 11.11/eleven eleven stands out by challenging our familiar perceptions of how these techniques are usually placed or applied to clothing. These visual elements, some of which also combine two distinct surface techniques, give rise to inimitable pieces— exemplified by their ‘Indigo Flower’ line— an aspect that has created a strong footing for the label within the industry.

Beyond design, the brand is widely recognized for its commitment to mindful creation and environmental responsibility. This commitment is embedded in the label’s philosophy, starting with the use of 100% natural dyes that create a rich, earthy palette of indigo, off-white, smoke, and more, and extending to the slow-made production process in collaboration with artisans across India.

Founded at a time when sustainability was not yet a mainstream concept, labels like 11.11/eleven eleven have made a significant impact through storytelling, communicating its value as a vital component of establishing a presence in today’s fashion landscape. Their focus extends beyond the superficial aspects of design; it encompasses the narratives, intentions, and transformative potential of clothing in an age characterized by a culture of instant gratification.

Roma Narsinghani

Founded by Roma Narsinghani • Started in 2018 • Concept Jewellery

by Manica Pathak
Share this article:

Roma Narsinghani’s jewellery pieces, crafted by skilled artisans, stand out unmistakably, adding a striking and distinctive touch to every outfit and look they accompany. Alongside India’s affinity for jewellery largely dictated by traditional players the industry is currently making room for innovative designs that push boundaries in both form and function. The label’s jewellery pieces are inherently Indian and yet they carry a contemporary flair. Roma Narsinghani’s signature style boasts gilded pieces with a maximalist-make, and contours in metal that are structured and sculpture-esque – precisely detailed.

Founded in 2017, Roma Narsinghani’s eponymous label crafts artisanal concept jewellery known for its geometric shapes and an approach that explores its conventional functions. What seems like intangible concepts or perhaps fleeting imaginations developed on paper, the label’s designs have been touted and favoured precisely for their whimsy and eccentricity. As captivating in reality as they appear on the glossy pages of magazines or digitally, these pieces aren’t afraid to take up space, introducing contemporary shapes and motifs that remould the concept of statement-worthy jewellery in India. Yet, their core identity remains rooted in inspirations drawn from Indian mythology, culture and Roma’s own Sindhi roots.

In the label’s collections, traditional craftsmanship shines through, showcasing the expertise of generational artisans- transforming every line, shape, and form from paper into tangible creations that reflect grandeur. Amongst their whimsical and playful pieces are hair buns – that have gathered prominence intrinsic to the label’s every collection. Other noteworthy explorations include metal bindis, scarf chokers and bracelets that embody chunky detailings.

Besides their designs, Roma Narsighani’s ethos deserves separate attention for its foundation in sustainability and creativity. Their designs incorporate unique materials like eco brass, recycled from previous collections, and algae beads, creating a regal aesthetic evident in their recent’ Lola and Koki’ collection. The label’s trajectory includes crafting capsule collection lines for the likes of Amit Aggarwal and Rahul Mishra – designers whose creations have set international runways ablaze. While the label is known for its sculpturesque style, Roma Narsinghani consistently reinvents itself with each collection. Drawing inspiration from various sources, the label transforms imaginative concepts into wearable forms that turn heads.

BTB: What drove you to design concept jewellery?

ROMA: Honestly, I like to design, if its apparel , jewelry or even spaces.. jewelry was a stroke of serendipity, stemming from a desire to create pieces that go beyond mere adornment. I am fascinated by the idea of using jewellery as a form of storytelling, weaving together elements of culture, history, and personal narrative into wearable art. Each piece becomes a canvas through which I can express my creativity and share meaningful stories with the world.

BTB: What has been an accomplishment that you have been the most proud of in your journey?

ROMA: One of the accomplishments that I am most proud of in my journey is receiving recognition for our sustainable practices and ethical approach to jewellery making. Winning awards such as the Sustainable Design Award by FAD & Helsinki Fashion Week and being recognized as a super talent by Vogue Italia reaffirms our commitment to creating jewellery that not only looks beautiful but also makes a positive impact on the planet and its people.

BTB: How do you visualize an ideal Roma Narsinghani customer?

ROMA: Visualizing an ideal Roma Narsinghani customer is like imagining a kindred spirit—a person who values craftsmanship, authenticity, and sustainability. Our ideal customer is someone who appreciates the artistry behind each piece, who seeks out unique designs that resonate with their individuality, and who shares our passion for making conscious fashion choices.

BTB: What’s your all-time favourite product?

ROMA: Choosing an all-time favorite product is a tough one, as each piece holds a special place in my heart. However, if I had to pick, I would say that our new algae bead hair bun is a current favourite, one can insert real flowers in it too, It is the essence of what Roma Narsinghani stands for—creativity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

BTB: Which three homegrown labels have grabbed your attention that you’d like to give a shoutout to?

ROMA: There are so many talented homegrown labels in India that deserve recognition. Three that have particularly caught my attention and that I would like to give a shoutout to are: Bodements, Doodlage & Studio Beej

Many of us tend to associate the country’s crafts with age-old silhouettes. For instance, the word brocade almost instantly brings to mind a lustrous jewel-toned sari. However, in recent times, several designers have been putting an unconventional spin on the country’s textile traditions by merging them with new-age designs. These efforts not only help preserve languishing crafts, which first surfaced decades and even centuries ago, but also increase their relevance by making them more suited to the needs of a modern-day wardrobe. Today, it’s possible to find cool jackets featuring meticulous mirrorwork by Indian artisans, breezy dresses that celebrate the over five-thousand-year-old technique of Bandhani and more pieces that seamlessly blend the old with the new. For those looking to acquire such styles, we’ve put together an edit of 10 items that showcase Indian crafts in a contemporary light. Scroll down to shop them now.

Indian labels you didn’t know created attention-grabbing accessories

In the past, most of us would have probably browsed through the collections of Indian designers if we had a wedding or a special occasion around the corner. Lately, however, this is no longer the case because the offerings of the country’s labels extend far beyond ornate lehengas and sweeping cocktail gowns. You can now find everything from a pair of sturdy blue jeans to a cool, deconstructed button down made by a homegrown brand, and the latest addition to this ever-evolving list is accessories.

Designers, both emerging and established, seem to have identified a lack of high quality made in India add-ons, and many of them seem to be working hard towards filling this void. Tarun Tahiliani now stocks belts that look just as good with tailored trousers as they do with a sari, Dhruv Kapoor makes micro bags that pack a major punch, and Rina Singh of Eka has intricately embroidered floral scarves that can lift even the most pared-back basics. Ahead, we’ve rounded up our favourite accessories from these and other labels closer to home. Scroll and shop.
